Newport Stops Highlands in the Game of the Week; Starks, Rondon Lead in the Big Win

Newport Stops Highlands in the Game of the Week

Starks, Rondon Lead in the Big Win

Face Covington Catholic Tonight

By Deon Cash

In the S.E.Live365 Game of the Night Newport last years Regional Champs in Northern Kenticky, traveled to play Highland HS.

With both teams looking to have a chance to claim the top spot in the region, the game was intense from the jump.

With the likes of Adam "Pac-Man" Jones in the building, it definitely felt like it had a "Game of the Week" vibe to it.

Highland came out firing, which was matched by 6'10 rising sophomore star Griffin Starks, who hit 2 early 3-pointers to kick start the offense for Newport.

Highland would take a slight lead at the end of the 1st quarter, but Newport would take control in the 2nd quarter behind the offensive play of senior guard Yamil Rondon and junior F-C James Turner.

Rondon, a 5'11 lead guard, would drop double figures in the 2nd and 3rd quarters to help Newport turn a close deficit into a 17-point lead at one point.

Rondon array of jump shots, moves to the basket, and 3-point bombs proved too much for Highland.

Turner, a highly recruited, 6'8 225 lb man- child, showed his array of skills by blowing past defenders and throwing down monster dunks, and also blocking shots and bringing tenacity in the big run.

In the 4th quarter Higland would make a furious run, as their shot making would slice the lead down, hyping their fans and giving them a shot late to steal the win.

Highland would make a furious run to cut the deficit to 4, but Deshawn Anderson, the 6'4 athletic 2-way wing player, would seal the deal with two huge free throws to give Newport the win.

Anderson was a key piece in making a run early as his defense and playmaking helped turn a close game into a big lead. He also showed the poise which could be crucial come tournament time.

Coach Snapp and the staff was happy about the win, but was not pleased with the fact that they haven't been able to close games like they need to.

Clark State Men Wins 5th Straight, Rolls Past Rio Grande; Ready For Crucial 3-Game Stretch

Clark State Men Wins 5th Straight, Rolls Past Rio Grande; Ready For Crucial 3-Game Stretch

By Deon Cash

The Clark state men's basketball team were able to pull out another big win Wednesday night as they defeated Rio Grande.

The game was a close back and forth affair, until about the second portion of the second half.

That is when the Eagles used it's intensity, offensive execution and defensive prowess to shut down Rio Grande in the second half, causing them to shoot a low percentage, and helping them build a double-digit lead. The Eagles would win 78-62.

With only 7 players seeing time, it has seemed to bring the team closer together.

With the win, the eagles now move to 12-10 on the season. It also keeps them in the hunt for a top 3 spot in the OCCAC at 4-5 on the season.

And it gives Head Coach Quinton Alstork and the team their first 5-game winning streak in his era. What Alstork and his squad have done in this season has been remarkable to watch.

"I like the way my team has responded to the adversity. We were 7-10 and going nowhere fast. But after a closed doors team meeting with them, giving them a chance to speak and address issues and bonding with them, we have bounced back and are tighter than ever. I love these guys." Alstork stated.

With All American candidate Isaiah Masteller taking on a bigger role as a leader, along with Brandon Miller, David Mensah, Tabias Thompson and Jermaine Tubbs stepping up their respective games, the team has turned its season around.

Even Ramiro Martin has continued to blossom as a key player off the bench.

However the next 3 games will give a indication of where the Eagles are and will finish this season.

The Eagles will head up northeast to face Lorain CC (Saturday 11am) before the rematch with Edison State on Tuesday (Home game, 7pm) and then a possibly huge game against Lakeland CC.

But for now, the Eagles will take one win at a time.

"We gotta get this win tomorrow." Alstork stated.

Battle of The Bigs Set as Miamisburg Visits West Carrollton Tonight

Battle of The Bigs Set as Miamisburg Visits West Carrollton Tonight

By Deon Cash

The West Carrollton Pirates, winners of 6 of their last 7 games, will face the Miamisburg Vikings tonight.

The interesting part?

This will be a old school battle where the big men will be the focus on the evening.

In this new era where 3-point shots are applauded, tonight will be a old school vibe as Andrew Horner, The Star big man for Miamisburg will battle the Ingram cousins from the Pirates tonight (7:30pm).

Hoerner (6'8,  240) is one of the top scorers and reboundera in the GWOC.  He is a legitimate Player of the Year contender.

Chylan and Joseph Ingram have been wreaking havoc in the Miami Valley League all season.

Chylan Ingram (6'7 220) is leading the MVL in rebounds while scoring and blocks is in the Top 10.

Junior C Joseph ingram (6'7 250) is third in scoring, top 5 in shooting percentage, and is averaging ten rebounds per game.

While there are good players surrounding these big men, there is no doubt that this is one of the rare elite big man matchups that you will see in Southwest Ohio this season in the high school ranks.

Both teams are playing well, so it will be a battle.

Not to mention sthese schools or about fifteen minutes apart, it's also a rivalry.

The game is at West Carrollton and it starts at 7:30.
