Murka, who is on a few of Whos who list for his accomplishments, has taken this challenge with purpose and knows Sinclair will be back as strong as ever.

After years of building up one of the top athletic programs for D-2 junior college in the country, the Sinclair Tartans have taken a loss to Covid-19. It has been announced that due to the Coronavirus breakout Sinclair Community College athletics has been suspended for the entire 2020-21 season.

In the midst of one of the biggest pandemics in American history, it was reported earlier this week. The Sinclair program, which hosts men's and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, and volleyball teams, will not be holding any games, scrimmages, practices, tournaments, and any community events while on suspension.
While the school will look to regain the program back to normal in 2021-22, this is a major blow for the only JUCO in Dayton, and it could be a sign to come on what college sports will be doing in the upcoming season.

On the bright side, Sinclair has decided to do some things for all student-athletes that were enrolled in the 2019-20 season along with its incoming commitments for this 2020-21 season.

Free Tuition / Fees for Student- Athletes:
With financial aid, scholarships, and grants available, every student athlete who studies at Sinclair will be guaranteed to have paid tuition and fees for up to 36 credit hours up until the end of the 2021 Spring term.

Offering Direct Support to uphold their academic progress:
The Athletic Department staff and Sinclair employees will continue to support and provide guidance to student-athletes, and will continue to track their academic progress.

While the Athletic Director (Jeff Price) was not available for a statement, the president did respond to the situation.

The President, Dr. Steve Johnson, spoke in a press release:
“We are faced with extraordinary circumstances as the nature of this pandemic is rapidly changing. Every decision that we have made has been aligned with the guidance and recommendations from the Governor and public health officials. The safety of our students and staff is of utmost importance and we have determined that it is in the best interest of our campus community that we follow the recommendations of public health authorities and cancel our athletics activities for the rest of the year.

After much consideration, we see very little possibility within the next year for our athletics teams to practice, play and travel together without violating social distancing measures. Given these circumstances, Sinclair will continue to work with our student-athletes to ensure a smooth completion to this term and that each student will be able to meet their educational goals as planned. Sinclair faculty and staff stand ready to help students adjust to these new measures for as long as necessary.”

While this is a big surprise to most, the sports world has been rocked by Covid-19 and the inability to get a hold on it. With no cure in sight until the end of year, Sinclair knew that it could not risk the lives of people in the midst of this world crisis.
