Pirates Stop Piqua to Win 2nd Game of Season

 The West Carrollton Pirates used their inside play and defense to stop Piqua in a home game by the score of 43-34 Tuesday night. 

With the win West Carrollton moves to 2-0 on the season.  

Senior guard and 2-sport star Antonio Robinson led the team with 15 points, 5 steals and 8 assists while All-State Junior F Chylan Ingram had 13 points, 7 rebounds & 5 blocks to enforce that stifling interior defense that the Pirates have this season. 

The Pirates hadn't played a game in over 10 days, as the 2nd game of the season was postponed due to Fairborn having an flu and covid outbreak recently. 

"It felt good to get a win in front of our home crowd today. And it also felt good to get back on the court after having time off." Head Coach Anthony Parker stated.  

This is a big week, so this is a good start for us." 

The Pirates will play Friday night in Sidney before travleing to Cleveland to play in the HS Showcase on the Cavaliers floor for a 3rd straight season.

 Clark State Women Look To Win 3rd Straight Depsite Shorthandedness Tonight 

The Clark State Womens team is sitting at 6-4 after  consecutive wins in this roller coaster of a season so far for Coach Steinke and his girls team.

They started off 4-0, then lost 4 straight. Now after big wins over Miami Middletown and Findlay JV, the Lady Eagles will face UC Clermont at home for a chance to win its 3rd straight. 

However the Lady Eagles will be without some players, and even a coach, as injuries and the winter season has touched the Lady Eagles. 

"Will be tough game vs Clermont tonight, but the girls are ready for the challenge." Coach Steinke said. 

Steinke knows that if somehow they can win this game, it puts them back in the OCCAC race and sits them at 7-4. 

The game will start at 5:30 and will be streamed on Clark State Athletics Youtube Page.

The Clark State Mens hoops team is on a roll after a big win on the road against Miami Ohio -Middletown 93-70 earlier in the week. 

With that win it gave the Eagles their 3rd win in a row, the first winning streak under the Alstork era. Now sitting at 5-3, the Eagles will face Lorain C.C. today at home. 

After a uninspired loss to Wittenberg, the Eagles have rolled off 3 stright, and sit atop the OCCAC standings, although it is still early. 

"The team is working hard, and they didn't like losing to Wittenberg. Since then, they have been focused and locked in." Alstork said after Miami Middletown game. 

The Conference game against Lorain Community College is at 1pm ET today.

Clark State Men Bounce Back, Sit in 1st Place in Conference After Perfect Road Trip

The Clark State Eagles was 2-2 and had a lackluster night at home vs Wittenberg JV, falling 91-84.  

After the loss, coach Alstork was upset at the level of play following Thanksgiving break. The worst part is that they would be headed on a tough road swing to start the OCAC season. 

They would face Owens C.C. and Bryant-Stratton in a crucial early season road swing. 

Against Owens Community College, the Eagles had possibly their best game of the season, as the execution and focus was at a all-time high after the loss. 

They would jump on Owens C.C. early and often, and win going away 99-84 on Wednesday. Then last weekend they would face Bryant-Stratton, and produce another big win, sending them to 2-1 on the week, 4-3 on the season and 2-0 in the OCCAC.

The Eagles haven't been in 1st place this early in decades.  The Eagles would celebrate after the Bryant - Stratton game as they understood that they are in 1st place, albeit its still early.  

But this Clark State mens team is showing they are different.

Clark State Celebrates 1st Place in OCCAC

"The team played exceptionally well in the last 2 games. They got after it all week after the tough loss. They were upset about that loss at home, and went and stood on business on both road games. This gives us a big boost as we move forward into the season. 

Chris Herbort, Gio Roberts, Rynell Echols and Tyson Jones led the team this week." 

Head coach Quinton Alstork said. 

The Eagles will face Miami Middletown on the 6th (Wednesday) before facing Lorain C.C. in OCCAC play Saturday on the 9th (Home game - 1pm ET). 

Shaker Looks To Run Record to 2-0 In Road Challenge; Favret MVP of Last Game

 The Shaker Heights Lady Raiders look to try to go to 2-0 tonight as they face Mentor HS on the road tonight (6pm ET).

The Lady Raiders used a sound defensive effort and a dominating offensive effort from its junior star F Lizzy Favret in a tough season opening win over Villa Angela St Joseph 41-34 on last weekend. 

Favret is one of the 25 best juniors in the state and earned the Gatorade MVP award after her effort.

Coach Conwell would talk after the game.

"There a extremely talented program over there in VASJ. Thats why you have the off-season to prepare and that's what we did. We wanted to get better and we did. 

That was a great game from Lizzy and from our whole team today. Now we ready for our next big contest vs Mentor. Go Raiders!" 

Tonight the Lady Raiders travel to talk on Mentor, another solid test for Conwell and his squad.

  Clark State Falls To Wittenberg Late; Readies for Conference Play This Week

The Clark State Mens squad lost to Wittenberg JV on Tuesday night by a score of 91-84.

Wittenberg held a 15-point lead in 2nd half (71-56)  before Clark State made a furious run to cut it to 88-82. 

However a missed 3 with less than 15 seconds left doomed the Eagles hopes. With the loss Clark State falls to 2-3. 

The game was originally scheduled for last week but due to conflict and Thanksgiving both teams decided to push game back to next week.

While the loss hurts the Eagles, coach Alstork knows now is not the time for any slip ups as they will start conference play, at Owens Community College tomorrow night. 

They also play this weekend on the road, so the sense of urgency has been heightened after that loss.

 Girls Basketball Preview: Shaker Heights; Can They Elevate in Season 2 Under Conwell? 

YEAR OF THE LADY RAIDERS? 

The Shaker Heights Lady Raiders come into this season with a renewed energy that carried over from last season as coach Carlton Conwell starts his second season at the helm.

Last season was a very good one for the Lady Raiders program as they finished in the top 3 of the conference, established a new identity, and even got a win in the OHSAA playoffs before bowing out in the 2nd round.

However the end of the season finished on a erratic note, souring how the season could have ended. 

There was a altercation at the last home game of the season, in the final seconds, against their rival nonetheless, and the Lady Raiders were never able to fully recover, as they lost players for the rest of the season and played shorthanded at the end.

Nevertheless, coach Conwell has reloaded, and is confident as ever in his team, which goes into a whole new conference this season (Greater Cleveland Conference). 

"We're extremely happy with what we did last season, turning the program around and creating some excitement and energy for the program. Now we have to continue to elevate. We have the pieces and the culture to do that." 

With the likes of sisters Lizzy and CeCi Favret back, along with guards Aryn Harris and Layla Robinson, the team is set for another good season. 

Ceci Favret has committed to Marquette for soccer while Lizzy is one of the top juniors in Ohio.

Coach Conwell also brought back his staff and added a coach, with legendary coach Leon Hines joining the staff. Hines last coached at Shaw HS a few years ago.

After some nice showing in scrimmages, the Lady Raiders will be put to the test today, as they will play in their first regular season game today. 

They will face Villa Angela St Joseph today at 2pm at Cleveland Heights. 

Coach Conwell spoke on the excitement of the new season and their expectations. 

We're ready for the new conference, the new season, and we want to be one of the top teams in Cleveland this season. Coach Conwell stated. 

"We feel like we can do that. The girls have bought in. We just have to continue to work hard every day and stick with our "WE" mentality. It's "WE" this season, not "ME".  

Look for a exciting second season for coach Conwell and his Lady Raider squad.
