State bound Trotwood, Thurgood, changes culture of Dayton High School Football

Brandon McKinney throwing with future QB
Last summer SportsEffectLive.com attended former C-J standout and current Indianapolis Colt Brandon McKinney's 7 on 7 passing camp (located at Trotwood Madison high school) in which there were 6 teams in attendance, all getting ready for the season; As we talked with one of the Trotwood coaches, they felt like that Thurgood wasn't quite on Trotwood's level, which may have been one of the reasons that the two schools didn't play this season.  As they competed in the summer drills, it was a heated series and Thurgood had stopped the Rams, which in turn gave them the ball. As it turns out, maybe they were one of the ONLY TEAMS who could have competed with the Rams this season.
Thurgood Marshall has gone where no Dayton City League team has gone before; landing in the D-III State Semifinals. Behind a incredible running game (led by Denzel Norvell and Vayante Copeland), a very good coaching staff and a underrated defense the Cougars have become a major force. Last year the Cougars was a cinderella team as they made the playoffs, beat a precocious Alter squad (who was undefeated) and almost got to state last year (losing to Springfield Shawnee after leading at half 13-0); this year, as the players said: This was revenge

And sweet revenge it was as the Cougars would beat the brakes off of Athens 60-21. There would be no comebacks this season as Thurgood amassed over 650 - yes, that's right - 650 offensive yards, while holding Athens to 230 yards. And with it, the Cougars have cemented their place in dayton history, as not only the first city team to get this far, but looking to build on a possible legacy if they can pull out a state title. Which leads us to the Trotwood Madison Rams...

Israel Green goin' ham
Trotwood, coming off a dramatic D-II State Championship last year,  looked overmatched, out of sync, and frustrated in their season opener against a mighty opponent in their first week on ESPN; Then injuries occurred, which forced them to look into a young QB to run the show...They lost another game early in the season to fall to 1-2. It looked like the Rams would flounder and maybe not even get back to the playoffs. After that, the coaches started to see the Ram football they had been accustomed to throughout the last half decade. The young QB (Messiah DeWeaver), called the "Black Tom Brady" by Coach Douglass, starts to develop; new guys fill into their roles; and the vets started to kick into top form.  After barely squeaking into the playoffs on a Week 10 win, Senior RB Isreal Green began the charge like he did last year, running roughshod over any opponent. Rams hit their groove, got their swag back, with a little more drama nevertheless, and got back to the State Semifinals for the 3rd season in a row.

Coach Maruice Douglass, who said earlier in the season that "Some new guys would have to step up" did a masterful job of coaching his guys up, keeping them focused, and not letting the bottom fall out when they started out 1-2. Now the Rams are literally two wins away from repeating as champions and starting the chants as a DYNASTY really in the making. With a rushing game that has been invigorated and a QB that has been making better and better decisions it will be left up to the defense, which has Mike McCray Jr. (Michigan bound) leading the stable of Rams who make it happen, this could once again be "RAM Nation" as they head into the Semis as the favorite.

Just a few years ago, if anybody said that City League Football was State worthy, you prolly would've laughed. Playoffs? Ok. State bound? Just don't happen. But with Thurgood Coach Earl White instilling a running game unparalled to any school in Ohio, its time to recognize that good City League teams can compete with ANYBODY. It was always a myth, a running joke, that City Schools weren't smart enough, weren't capable enough of competing with the big schools. Funny, all it took was a couple changes here or there, a dedicated group of young men, a solid game plan, and the skys the limit.

Whether they like it or not, the ONLY team capable of playing with the mighty Rams is the Thurgood Marshall Cougars. And that, my friends, is no joke.

How sweet would it be to see both teams bring home the title?  Maybe we just might see that rivalry renewed next year.

Top 5 Sports Topics of the Weekend

(1) Lakers coach Mike Brown axed after 5 games; D'Antoni sneaks job over Phil Jackson
When Mike Brown was given his pink slip after only 5 games, it was one of the quickest (and lame duck) firings in history (of any sport)..And once the fans started chanting, "We want Phil, we want Phil" it looked like a foregone conclusion that they would be dusting the amazing Luxury Chair they pull out for Jackson while everybody squishes together on the sideline...But as fast as a Nash steal to a driving Kobe slam, D'Antoni signed a deal (3 years, 12 M) in which he had convinced the Lakers that his offense and his prowess could get them to a NBA Title... Just one question.  What in the hell is Lakers Management doin'?  They sidestep Phil Jackson (and Brian Shaw!) for Mike D'Antoni? Did they not see what happened to him in New York?

(2) Trotwood, Thurgood Marshall one step away from state
Trotwood continues to show its championship swag by pulling out a late comeback against Winton Woods; Down 20-7, they come back to win 27-20 in OT, (led by RB Israel Green) and a key late pick..Thurgood just dismanted Galia 69-9 to move into a rematch with Springfield Shawnee for a trip to State...This Cougar team is quite possibly the best ever to come out of Colonel White, and depending on how they do this season, maybe better than the Roth teams in their Keith Byars heyday

(3) Bengals end slide against champs; 3 QB's taken out from concussions Week 10 NFL
The Bengals ended their 4 game slide by beating up on the Giants; Andy Dalton threw for 4 TD's to get them back into playoff race (4-5).. Starting QB's Alex Smith (S.F), Mike Vick (Phi) & Jay Cutler (Chi) was knocked out of game this week;  none of their teams won, while the 49ers and Cards tied at 24....Texans win in the Statement game of the week @ Chicago 13-6 and knocking Cutler out of the game on a vicious hit.

(4) Alabama Loses, now opens door for new Champion outside SEC
Alabama takes a loss at home to the newcomer of the league, as Texas A&M stops the Crimson Tide winning streak. Wonder if the Alabama QB cried after this game too....Not sure why he was crying after a win, but you have to cry after a loss too right? Anyways, now Notre Dame, Kansas St., and Oregon are the only undefeated teams....I can just hear the groans of the Southeast every time I see a shiny helmet and a leprechaun running around after a Irish TD.  Who wins the championship? Im betting on Oregon.

Dayton Knights - Dayton, Ohio
(5) Dayton Knights hold hoop tryouts for new season
The Dayton Knights will be playing the UBA this season, (starting in December) and held their first tryout at Vandailia Rec Center; with over 20 players in attendance, the staff was able to grab some key players...However there will be another showcase (Early December) as the Knights prepare for the upcoming season. Go to the Dayton Knights page on facebook for more info.

TOP 10 NBA Storylines (2012-13)

Whats up my peoples! With the 2012 NBA season ending up with Bron Bron, DWade, and Bosh getting that elusive NBA Title over the upstart Oklahoma City Thunder (brushing the haters off in the process), it setup a amazingly busy off-season which had some good (Olympic Gold), some bad (Dwight Howard  saga), and some ugly (Jeremy Lin / Knicks situation); With the NBA 2012-13 Season in gear, we here at SPORTSEFFECTLIVE.COM  would like to present you with the

SELIVE  TOP 10 STORYLINES in the NBA

Drum Roll Please.......LETS GO!

(10) Will the Knicks make a serious run this season?
The Knicks finished last season much like they started it - in a flux, trying to compete without a full team on display (Jeremy Lin knee & Amare smashing hand, Baron Davis hurt, changing of coaches) against a team the Knicks feel like they was as talented as and as good as (Miami). And while they was dealt a quick first round exit to the eventual champion Heat, the Knicks went away feeling as if they could - dare say it - beat that Miami Heat team, with a few changes, to say the least. So they ditched Twitter legend and 10 game sensation Jeremy Lin for a more solid, but sometimes silent Raymond Felton, and signed Hall of Fame PG Jason Kidd; They brang Rasheed (pronounced RAAAH-SHEEEED) Wallace out of retirement to shore up the frontcourt, and with Melo staying in shape year round and keeping coach Mike Woodson to start the season, there is no reason why the Knicks couldn't.....win a first round series this season?
Note: Amar'e Stoudamire is injured for first 6-8 wks with knee injury, making Rasheed that much more valuable.

(9) Are the Brooklyn Nets gonna take over crown as "King of New York?"
In the rap game, there are a few cats that could rightfully claim one of the most prestigous positions in history. Biggie, Nas, Jay-Z, 50, Diddy to name em. King of New York has one of the most powerful sounds to it in the english language.  Just ooooozes power, fame, fortune. And now, with the Brooklyn Nets in their new incredible playground (Barclay Arena), move over Knicks, as the Nets owner, (a Russian version of Ivan Drago In A Suit) tries to take the Nets where they have never been before. Teaming with Jay-Z definitely helped his cred (streed cred, to be exact) as Prokhorov has been loose with the pockets (signing Deron Williams, Joe Johnson, Gerald Wallace, and Brooke Lopez) and has repeatedly said his 5-year plan will bring him a title. Will Prokorov take the Jay-Z Blueprint route? Or will he be more on the Vanilla Ice plan? I'd have to say right now, "Ice Ice baby" as Prokhorov has delivered a amazing one hit wonder with his new Arena and Team; Question is can he create a Classic Album? Remains to be seen.

(8)  Rookie Report
Every season there is rookies who look to shape the future of the league, and this season is no different as colleges finest head to the pros. With Unibrow expert Anthony Davis leading the way, here is some rookies to look for to make a IMMEDIATE impact:

Anthony Davis (New Orleans) - Davis reminds me of a young Marcus Camby, but with better skills on O. He can single handedly win a game without scoring 5 points, and he will keep the Hornets competitive every night. And he will be rookie of the year as well.
Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (Charlotte) - Kidd-Gilchrist is not the most recognizable player, nor will he amaze you with his high flying tactics or flashy moves, but one thing will be evident; his overall skills will help Charlotte climb up the ladder this season. He's a stat sheet stuffer who will become a lockdown defender and a 14 point, 7 board type of guy this year.
Damian Lillard (Portland)  - Lillard lit up the summer league and preseason, and will get his chance to be the dynamic PG he is. With some good pieces already in place, he will fit seamlessly and could help the Blazers get to the playoffs. Rookie of the Year darkhorse.
Harrison Barnes (Golden St) - Barnes had a good college career, but looked to be already thinking NBA while at UNC. Now that he's in the NBA, look for Barnes to average 15+ this season for the rising Warriors.
Dion Waiters (Cleveland) - When the Cavs drafted Waiters, there was a feeling of "why they do that?" & "He ain't even start on his college team!"  But when you look more at Waiters, you realize he was the PERFECT pick. A confident combo guard who can shoot from real deep and can slash to the hoop as well, he will have ample opportunity to do his thing. If his defense turns up, he will be on the short list for Rookie of the Year.
Jared Sullinger (Boston) - Sullinger dropped a little because of his "lack of explosion & knee problems" but his first bucket in the NBA was - a fast break dunk. Point made. Sullinger will be a key piece of the Celtics run if they want to get back to the NBA Finals.

Two other rookies to watch: Jae Crowder (Dallas) & Bradley Beal (Washington)

(7) Texas Roadbock
Lin-sanity to the Dirty South
With 3 teams in Texas, there is a constant battle for bragging rights, but which team will be best? Dallas will have Nowitzki out early, but with newcomers O.J. Mayo and Darren Collison in the backcourt and rookie F Jae Crowder coming on strong, the Mavs could be a late season suprise; The Spurs will depend on their vets to keep them atop the league, but can they get back to the Finals with a old aging team? And the Rockets made the splash of the preseason, trading to get James Harden and Daequan Cook, but will they have enough to get into the upper echelon of the West? And will Lin-sanity continue to ball out in the dirty south? A Lin - Harden backcourt is very intriguing.

(6)  Battle for LA
Last year the Clippers announced that they will be a threat last season by pulling a Kevin McHale (up and under post move) on the Lakers, sneaking Chris Paul and solidifying themselves as a player in the Western Conference Sweepstakes. The Clippers made it to the second round, and now with new players such as Lamar Odom, Matt Barnes, Jamal Crawford, and Grant Hill, can they take the leap over the Lakers? Not so fast Clip Joint, as the Lakers looked to do a one-up with the trade of Dwight Howard and the signing of Steve Nash. Should be a great year for LA. Which team will rise above the other?

BONUS:
Cavs, Pacers look to make major strides this season.

Cavs Season Outlook: Will the Cavs make the Playoffs?

The Cavs new dynamic backcourt duo
The Cavs made a great decision to draft Kyrie Irving and Tristian Thompson last season, finally pulling away from the dark LeBron cloud that lingered over the franchise since the "Decision". Irving was the Rookie of the Year and proved the doubters wrong, that although he only played in a handful of college games, he was the real deal. With another bold draft in Dion Waiters, its looks as if he has his backcourt mate for the next 5 years; I said that Waiters would be a double figure scorer as soon as he touches a NBA court, and it looks as if he will (17 in his season opener). If  wild thing Anderson Varaejao can stay healthy, look for the Cavs to snag a 6 or 7 spot this season in the Playoffs.

Pacers Season Outlook:  Can they get to the Eastern Conference Finals?
The Pacers had a great season last year; They won a first round series, and won 2 games from the Heat, actually holding the lead in the second round series (2-1). However, DWade and LeBron woke up, turned up the juice and sent the Pacers packing. With budding talent in Paul George, Danny Granger, and Roy Hibbert, the Pacers will look to move up into the top 5 teams in the NBA. Won't be easy, but the foundation is there. George Hill will be running the show, and if George can take a step up, the Pacers will be a player again in the East. Only thing is, this season, nobody will overlook Indiana, which means they will have to come to play every night. Can they take it to the next level?

Note: They won't have Larry Legend looking over their shoulder this season.

Weekend Review: NFL Week 1 Recap; Knox Indy vs Ohio Challenge;

SportsEffectLive.com brings you the hottest events going down this past weekend.....With NFL week 1 goin down, the Knox vs Indy Challenge along with the Dayton Revival Festival, there was plenty of great things to do in the Miami Valley and beyond.

Heres our SELIVE HOT 5 SPORTS WEEKEND RECAP

  • 1st Annual Knox Pro Am Indy vs Ohio Challenge a HUGE Success
With local NBA ballers such as Norris Cole, Daequan Cook, and Chris Wright flexing their hoop games, the hoop challenge at Trent Arena was a battle down to the finish. With thousands in attendance, the people was treated to great basketball from not only the Ohio legends, but from the Indy ballers as well. There were live music performances, raffles and giveaways from all of the NBA players in between TV timeouts, with Wolfie Mr. Sportsknowitall providing the commentary. President Carlos Knox felt like that it was a success as well, and looks forward to this being a yearly event in the city.
Look for the SELive TOP 5 plays from the event coming this weekend.

NFL Week 1 goes down
NFL week 1 is over, and it brought some of the biggest suprises - and dissapointments - to ever start a season in history. Here are some of the highlights and lowlights of the week:

  •   Highlights: Cowboys set the tone: Dallas is the one franchise who has supposedly wasted the most money and talent in trying to get to the elusive Super Bowl. However, with a revamped secondary, they shut down the Giants and won 24-17. Can they do it at the end of the season when it counts?

  •  Highlights: Mark Sanchez, Jets  - Sanchez, who has been ridiculed to no end since having a sub-par last season, and pre-season; However Sanchez led the Jets to a 48-point outburst, leaving the haters in the rear view, for a week at least.

  • Lowlights: Bengals get smashed by Ravens
This is the season that the Bengals can change their culture, but if they play like they did against the Ravens Monday night,  the only thing that will be changing is their fanbase. Now granted, the Ravens are Super Bowl contenders, but even without Terrell Suggs in the lineup the Ravens snatched the Bengals up and tossed them around like a fresh salad. The Bengals will have to bounce back next week. Or they could be in some real trouble this season.

  • Lowlights: Browns Rookie QB Brandon Weeden
I guess you could say that Weeden looked lost from the start, as he inexplicably got swallowed up under the Flag on the field during the pre-game ceremonies. Once the game actually started, looks like Weeden never found his way out. His stats? 12 -34, 4 INT's and a fumble. And when he had a chance to take the Browns down for a Game Winning FG? No chance. Management feels he will get better. I hope so. Because you have a better QB (Colt McCoy) sitting behind him wondering why he didn't get the chance.

  • Highlights: RG3 lights up scoreboard, beats Saints
The only thing Robert Griffin III didn't do on Sunday was wear his Sunday's best at the press conference; He decided that his first interview would be done in his Skins uni, which was fine considering the day he had in it; 19-26, 320 yards, 2 TD's and 0 INT's, and most importantly, leading the Skins' to a 40-32 win over the Saints. In watching RG3 you seen a confident, cool customer who looks like a franchise QB. And yes he will have bad days, but on this day? He showed his worth, outlasting future hall of famer Drew Brees. Redskin fans are foaming at the mouth right now....He definitely outshined #1 pick Luck and his other rookie QB counterparts...And was the only one to get a W as well.

  • Highlights: Referees do a good job.
When it was first announced that there would be "scab" refs due to discussions about the new agreement for the refs, most thought it would be settled by Week 1. Not so. And after all the complaining and whining, it seems that Principal - I mean Commissioner -  Goodell is deciding to stick with the new blood. Although everybody and they mama feels like the old refs are better, the new refs (which includes female refs as well) have been steadily getting better. Question is, how long will Goodell go with the newcomers, as the longer it goes, the more antsy the other refs, along with the coaches and players, get?

  • Lowlights: Referees do a bad job.
Although some of the refs did a good job, there were a few instances that were not as good. Like Victor Cruz being held on a obvious play in the Cowboys game, which might have cost them a TD; like the refs giving the Seahawks a extra timeout during crunch time against the Cardinals; And so on; The point is this: The refs are HUMAN, therefore they will make mistakes. It happens. As long as they man (or woman) up, and don't make any amazingly bad mistakes, then the replacement refs will and are doing a good job.

  • Highlights:  Fantasy star RB's get their money

If you took one of the 3 best RB's in the game (Arien Foster, Matt Forte, Adrian Peterson) you did well....All three of those performers did their thing and scored TD's and ran for a lot of yards, and caught for plenty of yards. Look to add Maurice Jones-Drew to that list for next week.

  • Lowlights: Fantasy Star QB's dissapear

If you took the likes of Mike Vick, Matt Stafford, or Eli Manning in fantasy, then it was a uneasy day for you. Although Stafford and Vick were in Top 5 in yards, they both threw too many INT's for you to capitalize on it. And although Eli was solid, he wasn't spectacular. Vick and Stafford tled their teams to comeback W's, so they will probably come back with vintage games. I'd definitely play em.

Highlights: Serena Williams, Andy Murray hoist US OPEN trophies

Serena Williams is showing why she could be considered the GREATEST FEMALE TENNIS PLAYER EVER. Williams continued her amazing season with a comeback win over #1 Ranked Victoria Azarenka, giving her another Slam this season. On the other side of the spectrum, Andy Murray held off former US champ Djokovic in five sets, giving him his first ever Major Championship, and second consecutive major victory (if you count the Olympics); when Murray lost Wimbledon to Federer, he told the English faithful "im getting close"...well he wasn't playing, and this could lead to Murray making his own spectacular run.

1st Annual Knox Indy Pro Am Challenge tonight; NBA stars on tap

With the Summer almost over, now is the time where NBA players are getting ready to get into shape and head back to training camp in a few weeks. However, the people in Dayton and the Miami Valley will get to see the last BIG NBA Showcase today (6pm @ Trent Arena, Fairmont High School).

Carlos Knox, one of the legends of Dayton and Indiana basketball (Meadowdale HS, IUPUI) will be bringing his Knox Indy Pro Am on the road back to his hometown, as the best of Indianapolis will battle the best of the DYT in this Sunday Showdown.

The Indy players will feature starting Pacers PG George Hill, reserve G Lance Stephenson (former Cincy Bearcat) and Starting PG for the Champion Miami Heat Mario Chalmers. The Dayton NBA players will be Miami Heat G Norris Cole, Oklahoma City Thunder G Daequan Cook, and Toronto Raptors F and former UD Flyer Chris "Flight" Wright.

There will be one surprise player, as legend Dwight Anderson (all 50+ years of him) will be battling on the court with the Dayton squad as well. Just the fact that he can still play (and yeah he can STILL BALL with the best of em) out there is a testament to his skills.

Knox, who has the best summer league in Indy, has been quoted as being "blessed and excited" to bring this opportunity to Dayton. The buzz has been tremendous, the event should be sold-out and he is looking forward to the atmosphere and show.

This is definitely SOMETHING YOU DONT WANT TO MISS.
